Quarts to Liters
Convert US quarts to liters in your browser. A quart is 0.946 liters, which is why it gets mistaken for one.
l = qt × 0.946352946
NIST SP 811 (2008), Appendix B.8 — quart (US liquid) (qt) to cubic meter (m³) = 9.463 529 E−04
Engine oil, milk, paint and stock pots are measured in quarts in America and liters almost everywhere else. The quart sits close enough to the liter — 0.946353 of one — that the two get treated as equal, which is fine for soup and not fine when filling a sump that holds five of them.
How it is calculated
l = qt × 0.946352946
A quart is a quarter of a US gallon, and the gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches, so this factor is exact. Calling a quart a liter is out by 5.4 % — across a five quart oil change that is a quarter of a liter short.

Questions people ask
- My engine takes 5 quarts. How many liters is that?
- 4.73 liters. Buying five liters gives you a little over, which is the safe direction — buying four leaves you three quarters of a liter short, and oil level is not something to approximate.
- Is the imperial quart different?
- Yes, and by a lot. The imperial quart is 1.1365 liters, about 20 % larger than the US one, because it is a quarter of the larger imperial gallon. British and older Commonwealth sources mean that one.
- How does the quart relate to pints and cups?
- A US quart is two pints or four cups. So a quart of stock is four cups, and a recipe asking for six cups needs a quart and a half — 1.42 liters.
