Convert liters to US or imperial gallons. The two gallons differ by about twenty percent, so this converter keeps them as separate units rather than guessing.
gal (US) = L ÷ 3.785412
NIST SP 811 (2008), Appendix B.8 — gallon (U.S.) (gal) to liter (L) = 3.785 412 E+00
There is no such thing as "the" gallon. A US gallon is 3.785412 liters while an imperial gallon, still used in the United Kingdom and Canada, is 4.54609 liters — about twenty percent larger. Quoting fuel economy or a recipe without saying which one you mean is the single most common mistake in this category, so both are offered here as distinct units.
gal (US) = L ÷ 3.785412
The US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, which works out to the factor NIST publishes. The imperial gallon has an independent definition of exactly 4.54609 liters and is selectable in the unit list.

A number that disagrees with its source is a defect, not a rounding preference.
