Square Feet to Square Meters

Convert square feet to square meters exactly. A square foot is 0.09290304 square meters, which follows from the foot being exactly 0.3048 metres.

m² = ft² × 0.09290304

NIST SP 811 (2008), Appendix B.8 — square foot (ft2) to square meter (m2) = 9.290 304 E−02

Floor area is the number people compare when they cannot see a place: listings quote square feet in some countries and square metres in others, and a flat that sounds generous in one unit can be modest in the other. The conversion is exact rather than approximate, because the foot has been defined as exactly 0.3048 metres since 1959 and squaring an exact number leaves it exact.

How it is calculated

m² = ft² × 0.09290304

The factor is the square of 0.3048, the exact metre value of the foot. Squaring is where rounding hurts most: an error of a tenth of a percent in the foot becomes two tenths in the area, which on a large floor plate is a whole room.

Questions people ask

How big is a 1000 square foot apartment in square metres?
Just under 93 square metres. For a rough figure in your head, divide square feet by ten and subtract a fourteenth — but the exact factor is right here and worth using for anything you sign.
Why is the factor not simply 0.093?
Because 0.09290304 is exact and 0.093 is not. On a thousand square feet the difference is under a square metre, but on a warehouse of fifty thousand it is nearly five, which is the size of a room.
Does this work for land as well as floors?
Yes, the unit is the same. For plots of land people usually switch to acres or hectares once the number of square feet passes about forty thousand, since an acre is 43,560 square feet.
What about square metres to square feet?
Divide by the same factor rather than multiplying by 10.7639, which is a rounded reciprocal. There is a converter for that direction linked below.
